After the Storm: A 15-Minute Exterior Check

Use this ground-level checklist after high winds or hail to spot warning signs without putting yourself on the roof.

Strong wind, hail, and falling limbs can affect several parts of a home at once. A short walk around the property can help you notice changes early, but safety comes first: stay on the ground, avoid downed lines, and do not climb onto a wet or damaged roof.

Begin with the yard and driveway

  • Look for shingle pieces, metal flashing, or gutter parts on the ground.
  • Check for fallen branches resting on the roof or against utility lines.
  • Notice hail marks on vehicles, outdoor furniture, or soft metal surfaces.

Scan each roof edge from the ground

Stand far enough back to see the roofline safely. Look for lifted or missing shingles, bent ridge material, exposed dark areas, and anything that appears different from the surrounding surface. Binoculars or a phone camera zoom can help without adding risk.

Check gutters, downspouts, and siding

Look for gutters that have pulled away, downspouts that have disconnected, fresh dents, loose siding panels, or trim that is no longer sitting flat. Water should still have a clear path away from the foundation.

Look inside before the next rain

  • New ceiling stains or damp drywall
  • Moisture around attic penetrations or roof decking
  • Drips near chimneys, vents, or exterior walls
  • A musty smell that was not present before the storm

When to call for an inspection

Arrange a professional inspection if you see missing materials, active water entry, a damaged roof edge, or anything you cannot evaluate safely. Even when the exterior looks normal from the ground, an inspection can be worthwhile after a severe local storm.
