4. Check your carbon monoxide detectors

• Test each detector and replace batteries if needed.
• Confirm there is at least one detector near sleeping areas.
• Replace any detector older than the manufacturer's recommended lifespan.

5. Look at the outdoor venting

Leaves, nests, and debris can block exhaust and intake vents on the exterior of the home. A blocked vent can affect both efficiency and safety, so a quick visual check is worth the few minutes it takes.

6. Set a comfortable, consistent thermostat schedule

Frequent, large temperature swings make a system work harder than steady settings do. A programmable or smart thermostat can help balance comfort and efficiency through the colder months.

7. Schedule a professional tune-up

A homeowner check covers the basics, but a technician can inspect the heat exchanger, burners, electrical connections, and combustion safety in ways that are not visible from the outside. An annual tune-up before the cold arrives is one of the most effective ways to avoid a mid-winter breakdown.
