What Happens During an HVAC Tune-Up?
A seasonal tune-up is more than a filter change. Here is what a technician typically checks and how to get the most out of the visit.
A tune-up should tell you something. When it is done well, you finish with a system that has been cleaned, tested, and checked for safety, along with a clear picture of anything that will need attention soon. Exactly what is covered depends on the system and the company, but these are the things you should expect to see.
Airflow and filters
The technician will check the filter and the airflow through the system. Restricted airflow is one of the most common causes of poor performance and extra wear, so this is where a lot of the value is.
Electrical connections and controls
Loose connections and worn components can cause a system to fail at the worst moment. A technician will check wiring, capacitors, and the thermostat to make sure the system starts and responds the way it should.
Heating checks
- Burners and ignition operating correctly
- The heat exchanger inspected for signs of cracks or damage
- Venting and combustion checked so exhaust leaves the home safely
- A carbon monoxide reading taken at the unit
Cooling checks
For air conditioning, expect the outdoor unit and coil to be checked, the condensate drain to be confirmed clear, and the system's operating readings to be compared with what it should be producing.
How to prepare
- Clear the space around the furnace and the outdoor unit.
- Write down any noises, smells, or comfort problems you have noticed.
- Know roughly how old the system is and when it was last serviced.
- Have the filter size handy if you want to keep a spare.
